"Flake" became my closest friend during my separation before going to court for the divorce and after.
One particular Saturday night we decided to go out to celebrate my
divorce. Even though there was really nothing to celebrate, I had to keep my chin up.
Flake and I loved to dance so we went to a place called the "Clark
Rest," which was one of our regular hang-outs. We had a really great
time, but every time I went out with Flake we had a great
time. Weird things always happened to us, too. We both loved to dance, and the "bump" was popular then. The band was playing, we were sloshed among other things, and we got on that dance floor and really got into dancing. While we were dancing the "bump'" everyone left the dance floor and just watched us. We hadn't a clue, it was just too
funny! Every one was clapping for us!! We were so embarrassed we just casually ran to the ladies room.
After we left the Clark Rest we went to the Linden House Diner,
which we also went to on a regular basis after the bar closed. Every time we went to the Linden House, we always ran into someone we knew. That particular night I ran into Joe, whose mother was in a card club with my mother when we were kids, and I knew his father, too. We talked for a while, catching up on our lives since high school. All of a sudden all the people were gasping and laughing. I couldn't believe my eyes! I turned around to see a man totally naked asking for a menu! Flake and I got hysterical because it was so par for the course when we were out together. Then this guy I met when I was ten years old came in and was laughing, said "hi" to Joe and headed for the men's room. I asked Joe "hey, isn't that D. W.?" He told me yes, and that he worked with his father. On the way back from the men's room, he stopped to talk to Joe. Before he left I asked him if he remembered me. Well, he remembered my last name, anyway. It turned out that he was with the streaker who had just gotten arrested. This was, by the way, the beginning of my relationship with my second husband - D.W.
We added two more friends to our group, Helen and Joan "The Bone." That was really fantastic because if one of us had a man at the time, there was always a good friend available to go out with. Flake always cheered me up and those years with her saved my sanity because I became crazy. It was totally amazing!
